The Women’s Group

The Women’s Group

In the first few weeks, we often had mothers come to watch the sessions.  I askedsome of the mothers who were watching (with very young children in their arms) if they might like to dance with me. From this contact evolved a women’s dance workshop at the same time as the children’s workshop.

For my first session with the womens group, I choose for my object a self-made image of the footprints of my two children. This input inspired a dance which we developed together about what it means to be a mother: to comfort, protect, reprimand and give love. We often work with elements from folk dance: circles, arches, simple steps in pairs. Each week, I offer a new experience from contemporary dance. I try to make the unfamiliar easy, accessible and fun. No men are allowed to be present. The women are mostly not allowed to dance before men – or not comfortable doing so.
